This volume on dreams in literature from the tenth to the fifteenth century seeks less to define a non-existent norm than to express the dynamism of a literary device in which reason grapples with what had yet to be called the subconscious. Medieval dreams are not always messages from beyond – they often contain thoughts on power and the ambiguity of narrative art. Only rarely do they avoid double-meaning and illusion. One finds oneself reflecting not so much on a problematic ‘modernity’ of medieval dreams than on the archaism of mechanisms rediscovered by Freud.
