T. XLI, "Hors toute intimidation" : Panurge ou la parole singulière

Panurge, the least respected of Rabelais’s characters, is often dismissed as a mere foil for the giant Pantagruel. Rabelais has recourse to him often enough however, for this to be simplistic. Panurge’s unusual speech, mixing various languages, poetry and pastiche, is a complex element of the novels, which resists definition. Conventional semiotics does not satisfy Panurge, and his linguistic interpretations are equally challenging. This hermeneutic insolence layers meaning upon meaning, turning expectations on their head. His behaviour is just as eccentric as his language, and although it bears certain similarities to that of a literary villain or court fool, it again escapes easy classification. Panurge’s innocent, yet highly corrosive voice, plays a vital role in enabling his author to avoid censorship.
