In 1586 reformed and Lutheran theologians meet at last at Montbéliard. Despite high hopes, the meeting only exacerbates their differences of opinion. In Germany, Beza keeps his ear to the ground. France is torn between the Ligue, which is pretty much keeping king Henri III captive, and Henri of Navarre, self-proclaimed defender of the monarchy. Geneva has trouble feeding the refugees and the Academy empties itself. Appendices contain Isaac Casaubon’s notes on Beza’s sermons and on his 1583 lesson on Genesis, as well as Beza’s speech to the town council on the subject of just war.
