There was a marked deterioration in living conditions during the final years of Louis XVI’s reign, compounded by a poor harvest in 1788 and a worrying unemployment rate. Representatives of the third estate clearly manifested their independence from the king at the States General, eventually forming the National Constituent Assembly. On 24 August, the Assembly voted the abolition of feudal rights; two days later, the declaration of human and civil rights was approved. French politics, in which the king’s role was much reduced, were gradually transformed.
