The year 2004 was marked by the three-hundredth anniversary of the death of the two greatest French preachers, Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet (1627-1704) and Louis Bourdaloue (1632-1704). Before them, talented orators such as Du Perron and Saint Francis de Sales led the way; Mascaron was another contemporary; Massillon and Protestant preachers in particular would follow. The sermon is a fascinating genre, at once an aesthetic object and a liturgical moment. This dichotomy produces a result that is at once expected – the content being dictated by Catholic dogma or the Protestant familiarity with God’s Word – and unexpected – tugged between ornament and vehemence.
