Diogenes believed that the exercise of virtue is not for the faint-hearted, that it is possible to be obscene and virtuous, violent and educationalist, and remain supremely happy. The importance of Cynicism at the Renaissance may be measured by a handful of examples: Erasmus likening Christ to Diogenes; Rabelais comparing the writing of the Tiers Livre to Diogenes rolling his barrel; Montaigne criticizing Saint Augustine for misunderstanding the Cynics’ shamelessness; and La Boétie’s having as his ideal that man should be nobody’s serf. When right-thinking appears to be taking over, Cynicism’s incisive discourse can produce new literary forms and critical tools.
