Jheronimus Bosch : la question de la chronologie

The inventions in Hieronymus Bosch’s paintings very much appealed to the elite of his time and have also fascinated observers ever since. The number of copies and pastiches of his work are a measure of his success but complicate attributions, and the question of what his inventions mean has so far taken precedence over stylistic and chronological analysis based on all available data. The Last Judgement in Vienna, painted around 1505 for Philip the Fair, can be considered a turning point in Bosch’s career: what came after, such as the famous Garden of Delights, is characterized by a more careful touch than his pre-1505 work.
