Jean Rotrou (1609-1650) stands unquestionably as one of the very best illustrations for the long ignored French baroque drama. The tragicomedy of L’Hypocondriaque ou Le Mort amoureux (1628) is Rotrou’s first play. In addition to its intrinsic qualities, L’Hypocondriaque is of particular interest because it contains dramatic elements that will recur in Rotrou’s theater. Not only will this critical edition help to disseminate the knowledge of Rotrou’s theater, but its substantial introduction constitutes a viable theoretical basis for a better understanding of baroque drama. In an appendix, this edition features Autres œuvres poétiques, a collection of Rotrou’s first five little known poems.
