During the second half of the 8th and through the 7th c. BC, apt and innovative potters, each with his personal artistic touch, had established their workshops on many Aegean Islands, namely in Crete, Rhodes and the Cyclades, producing large amphorae with relief decoration. Reviving a prehistoric tradition, the potters of these jars decorated them by hand or by using moulds and flat stamps or cylindrical seals. They quickly achieved a monumental clarity and grandeur in their linear decoration but mainly in their epic or mythological scenes, which were sometimes completely unknown to the rest of Greece. The artistic and iconographic wealth of these relief amphorae by far exceeds their number in importance. Professor E. Simantoni-Bournia teaches classical archaeology at the University of Athens
