Tome XXX : 1589

The great event of 1589 was the war declared by Geneva against Savoy. Beza thus became a war correspondent, sending his friends letters from the front. Written in the style of the ancient Romans, his letters were much appreciated, read before the Council of Zurich and published in Basel. Geneva’s later abandonment by its allies, notably France, did not prevent Beza from applauding the ascension of Henry IV to the French throne and lauding his merits among the Swiss. This volume also contains some curious notebooks given to King Henry for governing France, since they were thought to date from his ascension in 1589. More attentive research has dated the document to 1576 : it can thus be found in the Addenda of previous volumes.
