De la banche à l’étude

Une histoire institutionnelle, professionnelle et sociale du notariat genevois sous l’Ancien Régime

0.00 CHF

Until the beginning of the 18th century, the offices of public notaries were designated by the term "banche", referring to the word bench, and thus the merchant area setup on the banks. In the course of the following decades, their role changed and their activities evolved. They became more discrete and withdrew from the bench into more private offices on the road. This book presents the reports that notaries kept of governmental and judicial authorities, of their colleagues, their employees and their clientele. They often acted in two capacities simultaneously; the majority were also prosecutors, lawyers or court clerks, in town or rural territories. Using many diverse sources, Barbara Roth's book revives the professional world of law under the Ancien Regime. With more than sixty biographies, this book is also the "who's who" of notaries in Geneva in the 18th century.
