La Sotise a huit personaiges, written in Toulouse around 1507, is a crucial indicator of the complex relationship of power and culture in the era preceding absolutism. A synthesis of early sixteenth-century dramatic writing, the Sotise arms itself with folly and satire to defend the privileges of the Gallican church against those in power. Olga A. Duhl’s critical edition puts forward a new hypothesis on its ‘genre’ and authorship. This adaptation mingling farce, morality and mystery plays in a wide range of poetic forms must have had the input of a Toulouse poet such as Blaise d’Auriol, who stood for the conservative ideology of the university and was the winner of the Jeux floraux literary contest that the Sotise parodies. The Sotise is also a precursor of the political utopias of the Renaissance in its depiction of a New World.
