When Charles Sorel published Description de l'île de Portraiture et de la ville des Portraits in 1659, it was becoming fashionable to have one's portrait painted and many a writer took to collecting paintings. The production of literary portraits was reaching its climax at the same time. Sorel bears witness to this craze in relating Périandre's visit to an island full of portraitists. The descriptions of these artists bring forth a satire of their vainglorious models, with their disguised bodies and masked faces. Portraiture was already present in Sorel's early fictional works, as the supplementary material included in this edition demonstrates. Yet in this imaginary voyage mixing fantasy and criticism, the author goes much further: not only does he reveal the vices of his time, but he also denounces the impostures of mimesis and the falsehood of pictorial or verbal depictions.
