Mercuriade is a five-act tragedy in verse written in 1605 by Dominique Gaspard, a Trinitarian from Lorraine. The play relates the Hungarian episode in the life of Philippe-Emmanuel of Lorraine, second Duke of Mercœur, from the moment he joined the imperial army fighting against the Turks (October 1599) until his death on the way back in Nuremberg (February 1602). By approaching such a topical subject from a Christian viewpoint, he foregrounded the defenders of Christendom combating on the borders of Europe, but he also helped to keep alive the memory of a hero whose eventful life was becoming more and more like a legend. Although the play is not unusual, since it is written in Ronsardian style and conforms to late Renaissance irregular drama, its dramaturgical interest lies in the fact that it seems to have been destined to be performed in schools. Seen from that angle its composition becomes meaningful, and what could appear as self-indulgent and overwought can be justified by the constraints of the stage. Whereas only lists of titles are to be found in the repertories of the colleges of the time, it is a good thing to be able to give documentary status to such a rarity as this play and to bring out its didactic purport.
