In 1970 Julia Kristeva recognized Jean de Saintré by Antoine de La Sale as being the 'first French novel written in prose'. However, it wasn't 'the personal worth of the author' nor 'the aesthetic importance of the work' that interested her, quite the opposite. It was rather 'by their anonymity, or, if you like, their “insignificance” that these texts deserve[d] our attention as a place of structural change'. The present work challenges this judgment by showing how intrinsic the author's persona is to the texts - so no anonymity there. As for being insignificant, even if Antoine was not consistently a great writer, he was a great writer nonetheless.
