Suisse-Portugal : regards croisés, 1890-1930

This work concentrates on how Portugal and Switzerland perceive each other, rather than on relations between the two countries. Switzerland’s interest in Portugal is awakened by major events: the English ultimatum (1890), the assassination of King Carlos (1908), the republican revolution (1910), Portugal’s entry into the Great War (1916), the military coup (1926) and the February rebellion (1927). The Portuguese admire Switzerland’s political organization, its efficient education system and its inhabitants’ public-spiritedness. The Swiss ‘model’ can’t be exported to Portugal because the two countries differ too much, however the Portuguese elite does experience the influence of Swiss educationalists such as Edouard Claparède and Adolphe Ferrière.
