The fifteenth-century prose composition the Roman de Perceforest is one of the most successful literary works of the later Middle Ages. In a grandiose six-part fresco, the work evokes the adventures of the distant ancestors of Arthur and of the Knights of the Round Table. The events related in this fifth part take place over the course of a year. A series of twelve monthly tournaments are, in the architecture of this part, the twelve pillars supporting the whole construction; but the anonymous author, astonishingly prolific in his imagination, intertwines numerous other adventures among these pillars. The literary, grammatical, and philological introduction; the critical apparatus; the plentiful notes; the various indices; and the well developed glossary all make this a valuable edition.
