Universal chronicle compiled in 1388 by Jean de Noyal, abbot of Saint-Vincent de Laon, the Miroir historial originally comprised twelve books which retraced the history of the world from the Creation up until 1380. Only the last three books have survived into our own times. Printed in this volume is the tenth book, which covers the years 1223-1328. The history of France and its kings is amply treated in this book, as are the histories of the Holy See and of the Holy Empire. The abbot also makes digressions to discuss the state of the Holy Land and the customs of the Mongols. Finally, he outlines the history of his predecessors at the abbey of Saint Vincent. The present volume is furnished with an introduction as well as with an index verborum and an index nominium which form an inventory of all the words, forms and proper names of the printed text. Moreover, all the sources to which Jean de Noyal had recourse in composing his chronicle are listed. Per Förnegård is a researcher for the Swedish Royal Academy of Literature, History and Antiquities.
