Menander was an Athenian comic poet (4th century B.C.E.) who was one of the great celebrities of the theatre in antiquity. Julius Caesar preferred him to Terence, Plutarch to Aristophanes, Marcus Aurelius read him and orators found inspiration in his style. Subsequently, and for a very long time he sank into oblivion, even if he was sometimes admired for a few quotations which bore witness to his art. In the 19th century, the discovery of papyri restored him to prominence and to his rightful place as the fountainhead of European comic theatre. Behind the skillful techniques brought into play, one can also observe in his work an aspiration to transform society through the means afforded by the comic stage. The essays in this volume gather together several years of reflections on this major figure of world theatre. The author, a professor at the University of Geneva, has also published adaptations of Menander's comedies destined for the general public.
