Non commercial books in Imperial China

Based on the methodology of the history of the western book, recent histories of the Chinese book have first targeted the printed book in a commercial context. However, the European book evolved in very different circumstances from a technical, political and religious, as well as from an economic, point of view. For this reason, it seemed wise to adopt perspectives more reflective of the Chinese world. One of these perspectives is the polar opposite of earlier attempts and reduces the importance of the economic and commercial aspects of the Chinese printed book. In June 2009 an international conference was held to explore the different aspects of the production and circulation of the printed book by people whose goals were not primarily commercial. All levels of society participated in this, from the emperor himself to disparate agencies, from temples to individuals. These activities often involved considerable sums of money, but the profit that those involved hoped to glean from them was of a more subtle and complex nature than purely material gains.
