“Le Mortifiement de vaine plaisance,” or death of futile pleasure, is a devotional treatise composed by René d’Anjou in 1455. The author is writing for “the simple laypeople” and therefore uses no erudite phraseology, nor does he quote recondite sources. Adopting the form of an original allegory, he tells the story of a Pious Soul’s moving complaint to two allegorical figures -- Fear of God and Perfect Contrition -- of his incessant torment caused by illusory pleasure. The martyrdom that the heart suffers is bitterly described and the images are raw. The work reflects the mentality of the late Middle Ages, the devotion to the cross and the obsession with death, as influenced by Franciscan spirituality and the writings of Jean Gerson. The allegories are presented as theater and the dialogues are studded with suggestive images meant to sway their audience, as was the case with the sermons of the time. Three parables, which develop themes taken from daily life, are told with persuasive verve. As with René d’Anjou’s other writings, this text is wedded to its illustrative matter, which makes concrete the most moving scenes of the drama being told. The original text is accompanied by a translation into modern French and is embellished with variants, notes, and a glossary. It is completed by color reproductions of 16 miniatures.
