Along with the Song of Roland, the Life of Saint Alexis is considered one of the oldest literary works in French. Drawn from a fifth-century Greek account, the story tells of Alexis’s flight from Rome and his senatorial family’s expectations of marriage. After seventeen years as a beggar, Alexis was recognized as a man of god and nominated to be bishop of Edessa. Refusing the position, Alexis returned to Rome to live anonymously with this family, divulging his identity only at the end of his life. This critical edition provides readers with access to an important text in the history of French literature.
