Politique des "Amours" : poétique et genèse d'un genre français nouveau (1544-1560)

From 1544 to 1560, the vogue of the Petrarchan sonnet sequence gave birth to a new French genre: the “Amours”. From Délie and L’Olive to the many Amours by Ronsard, this groundbreaking study delineates for the first time the logics, inner workings, and political import of the more than thirty works which shaped the poetic landscape of mid-16th century France. It recaptures an overlooked aspect of love poetry: its collective dimension. From the explicit model, Petrarch, to less admissible sources (Venetian anthologies; Marot), the genealogy of this genre underlines first the novelty of a form imported from Italy, but rewritten according to a specifically French poetics of ‘variatio’. In a second part, the genesis of Ronsard, Le Caron, Du Bellay, Tyard and Des Autels’ collections pinpoints the aesthetic ideal of unity within multiplicity of works at once fragmented and unified by structuring devices and repetitive patterns. Lastly, the poetics of these collections illuminates how the individual works and the genre as a whole rely on imitation and differentiation to create new codes and canons which fulfill the cultural agenda of the Defense and Illustration of the French Tongue.
