Pour fixer la trace : photographie, littérature et voyage au milieu du XIXe siècle

Pour fixer la trace examines nineteenth-century writings on a common, non-literary theme: photography. This new form of representation is apparently in opposition to literary representation. Directly or indirectly, Flaubert and Gautier, historians and critics touch on this opposition. After Maxime Du Camp’s Egypte, Nubie, Palestine et Syrie, the first French book to be illustrated with photos, literary interest in photography reveals well-known texts in a new light. Conditioned by photography, the desire to “make things come alive” is common to literary fiction, travel narratives and historical pieces alike. The need for lifelike description also rules ekphrasis, a genre renewed by photography.
